Can the super blue moon affect your period? We talked to an astrologer

Happy New Year! You’ve made it through the first month of the year — no easy feat, especially when the year starts off with a powerful super full moon in Cancer, the emotional and sensitive sign of the crab. Fortunately, we have a special cosmic treat this January, thanks to the auspicious omen of this first supermoon followed by a second full moon on January 31st, another supermoon as well as a lunar eclipse. The full moon affects our psychic senses and our intuition, but can the super blue moon affect your period? The answer to that is a little bit trickier.

For those of us who bleed, our 28-day cycles can very often be synced to either the new or full moon. And since January 31st’s full moon is a blue moon, the second full moon in a month, and a supermoon — which means it’s 14% bigger and 30% brighter than a normal full moon, according to NASA — it makes sense that our bodies may be impacted. But does that mean we should expect our menstrual cycles to go totally berserk? Probably not.

We talked to astrologer extraordinare and horoscope queen for Coveteur,Amelia Quint, about what we can expect from this full moon (and from our bodies in the process).

When asked if the blue moon will affect our periods, Amelia explains,

“Yes and no. It’s no secret that the 28-day menstrual cycle reflects the 28-day cycle of the moon, but scientific research hasn’t been able to prove a link between them. Still, the moon remains a powerful symbol of femininity, so this could be a great time for you get in touch with your body or talk to your healthcare provider about what options might be best for you.”

So while this may not make your period suddenly irregular, or even regular, it may be the perfect time to go to the gyno to talk about an IUD or birth control. Maybe you want to start tracking your cycle using an app to really get into your own flow. And if you’re lucky enough to have your period on the full moon? Well, know that’s an extra powerful omen. As your body regenerates, the moon is illuminating your desires, helping you manifest and grow something new in the coming year. Honor your body, your needs, and your intuition, and remember that there’s no wrong way to connect to your body’s magick, full super moon or not.
